How To // Start Your Day Right

It really bums me out when people complain about Mondays. Or any day of the week, for that matter. I hope you've heard that saying, "It's not your Monday that sucks, it's your attitude that sucks." Not only do I agree with that, but I think that people just really set themselves up for failure in the mornings. If you make your mornings all about rushing around trying to get to a place you rather not be (work,) than you're stripping your mornings of their value. You only have so many weeks in your life... please, stop wasting them by only appreciating the weekends.

I've been known to spout some wisdom here & there. One thing I'm famous for saying is: "You spend 8 hours in bed & 8 hours at work, so you better have a good mattress & a good job." I'm sure someone else said it better & I was a copycat, but whatever. You'll have as many mornings as days you are alive... so why are you still having a rushed, stressful experience every day? Because you're allowing it. Try something new to start your day off with the right vibe.

Set yourself up for success // You've heard this before: plan your outfit, pack your gym bag & prep your meals the night before. This is in every article about morning routines because it's the most simple & most effective way to start your day right.

Get a good night's sleep // If you're having shit sleep, you'll have a shit morning. Get to bed on time. Expend energy during the day so you're mentally and physically tired at the end of the day and ready for bed. Our bodies were not designed to sit behind desks & look at screens, they were designed to scan the horizon and chase buffalo and pick berries and do other caveman stuff... right? Invest in a good mattress, have clean, crisp sheets & a comfy pillow. Keep the temperature low. I am a FREAK about my eye mask, I can't sleep without it. Blocking out all light does wonders for your circadian rhythm, it tells your brain when it's time to sleep. If your partner is interrupting your sleep, get ear plugs or make a body pillow barrier.

Wake up earlier than you need to // A rushed morning is not a zen morning. Ugh, I know it hurts. Just be stronger than your excuses. I set a rad song on my iPhone alarm to get me going. Sometimes I plug that same iPhone into a charger across the room, so I HAVE to get up to get it. I wake up 2 hours prior to the time I have to leave for work. This is my time, and no one else's, so it is very sacred to me. After a few awesome mornings, you'll regret sleeping in & giving up this precious time.

Invest in the tools // Invest in some tools to make your morning great. A stylish & effective alarm clock. Shower gel in a scent to wake up your senses. A bluetooth speaker so you can dance in the shower. This tea kettle, this coffee press, this coffee

Speaking of coffee // Learn to brew the best cup of coffee ever. Some people prefer to have a coffee machine with a timer so their brew is ready when they first get up. This seems a little drug-addicty to me, but no judgment. I prefer a French Press. It's more about the ritual & process for me. Not a coffee drinker? Tea, hot water with lemon, anything warm to get your system awake is bueno.

Treat yo'self // I love breakfast. It is my favorite meal of all time. It's also the most important meal of the day. Eating within an hour of waking gets your metabolism started after having fasted for the 6-8 hours you were sleeping. I have at least coffee, 1/2 a cup of oatmeal & 5 egg whites every morning. Sometimes those egg whites come with hot sauce & avocado. My favorite breakfast EVER.

Get comfortable with repetition // Variety might be the spice of life, but planning for variety takes a lot of effort, especially when it comes to the morning routine. Find an easy to prepare breakfast & stick to it.

Get buy-in from your family // I'm thinking about people with kids here. My mom had her daily routine & it involved all listed here plus making me a meal along with hers. As a kid I had my own routine- coloring books, cartoons & cartwheels until mom approved my outfit & we were out the door.

Worship your temple // There are a few hippy-dippy things I suggest you try on for size. Tongue scraping is an ancient Ayruvedic practice, and whenever something has been going on for thousands of years, I trust it has some credence. I also dry-brush my entire body before getting in the shower- you're cleaning your largest organ & getting your lymphatic system moving. Drink a cup of hot water with lemon. Not lemon juice from concentrate- use a real live lemon. I chug this while my coffee is brewing. MOVE your body. Do a power move. If you have the time or patience to do a full sun salutation, DO IT. If you have a great place to walk, WALK. Take a few minutes to just feel the vessel that carries you around all day.

Simplify the beauty routine // Just do less.  A quick shower with some yummy body wash to wake yourself up, a shampoo every other day, a curling iron for a loose wave & a light makeup routine is really all you need, despite what you've learned from Cosmo. Please do not wear false eyelashes to your 9 to 5. I will vomit on your cheap shoes.

Do something you like // For me, sometimes it's as easy as having a rad breaky & checking Instagram. Some days I take my coffee down to Windan and put my toes in the sand. Real Housewives on your DVR? Homework catch up with your kids? This is your time- do what feels good.

Ignore what doesn't serve you // Work emails first thing are not good for anyone. Just stop it.

Don't pressure yourself // I see a lot of bloggers touting the benefits of having a solid routine. They MUST meditate and mindfully eat 32 berries before starting their day, every day. I'm here to tell you that setting rules on how your morning should go is just going to leave you feeling guilty & inadequate when you don't follow it to a T. (Is this just me? Type-A?) How about you recognize that your body, mind & spirit are going to be at different levels on different days and rigidity doesn't serve anyone. No one's going to judge you if you sleep in on a Saturday. I'll be right there with you.
